Potomac

The Potomac MD real estate market is one of the most popular and prestigious areas in the metro Washington DC area and holds some of the area’s most expensive and desirable neighborhoods, such as Falconhurst, Potomac Falls, Potomac Village, Avenel, and Palatine.

Located just beyond Bethesda and bordered to the south by the Potomac River and to the east by I -495 and I-270.  Just a short 12 mile drive from DC, Potomac MD homes are known for large estate style homes with large lots, high quality schools,  and horse-country.  Potomac  began development of the some of it’s marquis neighborhoods back in the late 1960’s when River Falls and Potomac Falls were developed.  During the late 1970’s and early 1980’s there were numerous high-end neighborhoods underway including Falconhurst, CAMOTOP, Kentsdale Estates,  McCauley Park, several neighborhoods surrounding Potomac Village and eventually Avenel, to name a few.

Driving through Potomac neighborhoods you will see a diverse style of architecture ranging from colonials to transitional colonials to pure contemporary to international style mansions.  The median home price in 2010 was $1,166,262 with current listings ranging from about $500,000 to approximately $10,000,000.  The school system is typically ranked very high nationally and there are also many notable private schools located in Potomac.

In addition to desirable real estate, Potomac has its fair share of local parks such as Great Falls Park which is located along the famous C&O canal that runs along the Potomac river.  This recreational paradise offers biking, kayaking/boating, jogging, rock climbing and good old fashioned site seeing.   Located just off  I-270 and running along Seven Locks road, Cabin John Park is a children’s mecca with slides, swings and picnic area plus a scaled down train ride that runs throughout the park.  The trail also offers hikers and bikers an exciting trail ride as the park runs south down to the Potomac River where it meets C&O canal bike trail.

Much of Potomac is residential neighborhoods with retail and commercial space concentrated around two major shopping areas.  Potomac Village is located near the intersection of River Road and Falls Road.  It’s a quaint area made up of two grocery stores, a couple of restaurants with other small retail stores in between.  On any given day you can find friends and neighbors meeting together in the patio area sipping on a cup of coffee.  Cabin John Shopping Center is another retail hub located at Seven Locks Road and Tuckerman Lane.
